Close to 19,000 people, mostly government workers, participated in the R.A.C.E. to Serve 7 Fun Run on September 3, 2017 in Manila to kick-start the celebration of the 117th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary (PCSA) themed “Tugon sa Hamon ng Pagbabago: Malasakit ng Lingkod Bayani”.
Organized by the Civil Service Commission (CSC)-National Capital Region, the race began at 5:30 a.m. at the Quirino Grandstand as runners made their way through the stretch of the southbound lane of Roxas Boulevard.
Fun run winners received corresponding cash prizes. First, second, and third placers for the 3K category received P10,000, P8,000, and P6,000 respectively, while placers in the 5k run won P20,000, P16,000, and P14,000 respectively. For placers in the 10K race, the CSC awarded cash prizes of P30,000, P24,000, and P22,000.
Government officials who participated in the event include CSC Chairperson Alicia dela Rosa-Bala, CSC Commissioners Robert Martinez and Leopoldo Robert W. Valderosa Jr., Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial, former CSC Chairperson and now Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) Chairman Francisco T. Duque III, and DOH Assistant Secretary Enrique A. Tayag.
The fun run is sponsored by Pag-IBIG Fund, Social Security System, Maynilad, and the GSIS.
“Proceeds from the Fun Run will go the Pamanang Lingkod Bayani or PLBi program of the CSC. Through the PLBi, the CSC honors public servants who died in the line of duty,” said Chairperson Bala.
CSC recognizes their hard work and sacrifice through the program’s three (3) components: the Pamanang Parangal sa Lingkod Bayani, a posthumous award/citation in the form of a plaque signed by the CSC Chairperson; the Pamanang Lingkod Bayani Iskolarsyip, a scholarship program in partnership with the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges offering a discount on tuition fees for three (3) immediate family members; and the Pondong Pamanang Lingkod Bayani, a one-time financial assistance to be determined by the PLBi Executive Committee.
Since 2011, the CSC has granted Php13.4 million worth of financial assistance to the families of PLBi awardees, including members of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force 44, Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Traffic Aide I Sonny DC. Acosta who was killed in a hit-and-run accident in 2014, and a number of Typhoon Yolanda heroes.
Similar benefit events have been organized by CSC Regional Offices in various parts of the country.
The R.A.C.E. to Serve Fun Run is part of the annual celebration of the Philippine Civil Service Anniversary (PCSA) every September, which seeks to commemorate the birth of the Philippine civil service system in 1900, as well as to celebrate the contributions and hard work of state workers nationwide.
This year’s theme, “Tugon sa Hamon ng Pagbabago: Malasakit ng Lingkod Bayani”, emphasizes the continuing challenge to public servants to manifest malasakit in public service.
Next activities for the 117th PCSA are the Government Choral Competition slated on September 20, 2017 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and Awards Rites of the 2017 Search for Outstanding Government Workers in Malacañang. The CSC also prepared special treats and discounts for government workers for the whole month of September. Complete details are available at www.csc.gov.ph/pcsa2017.
